Meet the founding members of the Dallas News Guild Bargaining Committee

In a major move a year in the making, The Dallas News Guild on Monday announced the members of its first Bargaining Committee that will represent more than 100 workers at Al Día Dallas and The Dallas Morning News in contract negotiations.

The 18-member Bargaining Committee was selected by the guild’s Unit Council. A wide array of newsroom departments are represented on the committee, including audience journalists, researchers, visual journalists, reporters and copy editors.

“We worked hard over the past few weeks to recruit a committee of diverse voices and lived experiences,” Unit Chair Leah Waters said. “Each member represents a department in the newsroom, ensuring all voices are included as we shape a contract that protects all workers.”

The union has already begun surveying its members to learn about their priorities for bargaining and what’s important to them in a contract.

Bargaining Committee Chair Dom DiFurio said, “Seeing as this is a new process and culture we’re establishing at The Dallas Morning News I was thrilled at how many of my colleagues wanted to participate in bargaining with A.H. Belo.

“The breadth of talent and perspectives included on our Bargaining Committee speaks for itself and stands as a testament to the newsroom we want to have a hand in building here at The News. We look forward to working with the company to negotiate a contract that protects our staff and allows strong local journalism to thrive in Dallas for years to come.”

The Dallas News Guild’s first bargaining session is slated for Dec. 8.
